Cayenne Pepper for kitchen cuts

By Scott Anthony

A few days ago I prepared to slice some less than fresh bread by sharpening my knife. Gripping the crusty loaf, the blade slipped and knicked my index finger. It felt like a pretty deep cut and I rushed to the kitchen sink, creating some new words along the way.

Mrs. Anthony came in from the laundry room, took one look at me and left.
She came back with a little bag of brown powder and said, “Cayenne Pepper..it’s good for kitchen cuts.” I pulled my bleeding finger away in fear, “Is the severing of my favorite finger not good enough…you want to burn it too!?”

She tipped her head and gave me a half smile and said, “Don’t try to be funny when your bleeding…this herb will stop the bleeding and it won’t hurt a bit..hold still.”

She dumped a goodly amount right over the half-inch long cut and we watched as the powdered herb soaked up the mess and within a few moments, amazingly, the bleeding stopped. I was expecting a burning sensation, but felt none whatsoever. Cayenne pepper, the stuff I sprinkle on my pizza. Who’d a thunk it?
Apparently, lots of people thunk it.

Take Two #125: The Emotional Response

By Kyra-lin Hom

Instincts get a bad rap. We have them for a reason, but we've managed to reason our way out of listening. In our era of science and logic, thinking with the gut or heart is often ridiculed as romantic, feminized intuition. I know I second guess myself all the time (for better and worse). I hem and haw because I don't want to make the wrong choice, but also because I don't want to appear irrational or overly emotional. I like the idea of being steadfastly utilitarian in my decision making. But am I really just overthinking things and dismissing a key component of the human decision making process? Suffering over my suffering, as my friends and I say?

SLIDESHOW: Barton Street P-Patch going strong again; Brick oven fired up for bagels

Chris Luthi kicked off the season at the Barton P Patch at the corner of Barton Street S.W. and 36th Ave. S.W. on Saturday May 25, cooking bagels (for the first time) and pizza. People trickled in throughout the day. The event started around 10 am.

The dough, similar to pizza dough, was boiled in a pot over a camp stove then baked in the brick oven that Luthi designed and the P-Patch members assembled last year.

"Were going to try and do this once a month or we hope as we're in the experimenting process. We will be cooking different kinds of food such as bagels, bread, and pizza, " said Luthi

Commercial Structure Fire in Kent

Building formerly housed Keg Restaurant

Kent Fire Investigators are preparing to enter the burned remains of a commercial building following a fire in the 26000 block of 104 Ave. SE.

The fire, which was first reported at 12:30 pm, formerly was a Keg Restaurant, though it has sat vacant for many years. When firefighters from the Kent Fire Department RFA and the Renton Fire Department arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the single story structure.

Because of the age of the building, how long it had burned, and the heavy HVAC systems on the roof, much of the firefighting was done from the exterior due to the possibility of collapse. In fact, a section of the roof that supported the kitchen ducting did collapse shortly after firefighters withdrew from the building.

It took approximately two hours to fully extinguish the fire.

There were initial reports of a man leaving the building at the same time as the fire. That person, an adult male, was questioned by police and fire investigators. He was also checked for any injuries, but was unharmed. There were no other reports of injuries.

The fire is currently under investigation.
