Second day of SeaKing track tourney sees Asaa Kaba of Chief Sealth advance

By Jeremy Martin

A rainy Tuesday afternoon gave way to a mild evening as the Southwest Athletic Complex played host to the second day of the Sea-King boy’s and girl’s 3A and 2B district championship track and field meet.

After several area athletes took part in an afternoon of intensive competition during Wednesday’s preliminary round, only one, Asaa Kaba of Chief Sealth was able to advance to Friday’s District Championships.

The sophomore was hoping to earn a spot in the 3A State Championship meet taking place at Mt. Tahoma high school in Tacoma, which will be held May 29-31st

Her finals time of 13.52 was good for 8th place but still left her .49 seconds off of her finishing time from Wedesday.

The Seahawks’s Brady Crane took 5th place in Wednesday’s district championship round of the triple jump and has thereby qualified for a spot in Tacoma.

Crane came in with a showing of 41 feet, 11.5 inches, besting out seven other competitors including fellow Seahawk Ronnie Parker.

Mayor Murray introduces Early Learning Nation resolution to U.S. Conference of Mayors

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has introduced a resolution to the U.S. Conference of Mayors expressing a commitment to designating “the decade of 2015 - 2025 as an era of community focus in building an Early Learning Nation.”

“Cities throughout the nation are investing in their youth through early learning programs,” said Murray. “I saw this commitment through preschool visits in Boston and Jersey City earlier this year. In addition to seeing the value in person, I’ve read countless studies that show an early investment in our residents benefits every aspect of our community. I’m proud to have sponsored an early education funding plan in Seattle and look forward to working with mayors throughout the nation on this critical priority. ”

Fifteen mayors from around the country joined Murray by co-sponsoring this resolution. The resolution also has the support of the Bezos Family Foundation, which has had a vision of an early learning nation for many years.

Kennedy wins in state shootout

By Gerardo Bolong

Kennedy Catholic shooters continued to foster Lancer head coach Teddy Mitalas' superstitious ways when Simon Thomas kicked in a goal that won the match for the Lancers in a 2-1 overtime shootout win against Mt. Si at Highline Stadium on Wed., May 21.

The first-round Class 3A boys soccer win followed three shootout losses in the first round in previous years and produced JFK's first state win since 2008.

Following a 1-1 regulation time draw, the teams battled through two 5-minute overtime sessions before the tense shootout ensued.

The Wildcats (13-2-2) drew the first turn as goals from Connor Williams, Aaron Baumgardner and Max Adamson were matched respectively by Jake DeGagne, Jake Swaller and Kyle Peterson of Kennedy (14-1-5). In the fourth round, Lancer goalkeeper Leyton Thommasen dove low and to his right to deflect Alex Dolewski's shot.

"I've played against him in club," said Thommassen. "I was going to go the opposite of the way he lined up, but then decided to go the way he was pointing."
