The Second Annual Seattle Christian volleyball tournament in SeaTac provided the Foster High School (Tukwila) volleyball team a chance to retool while also smoothing out the kinks in a revamped starting line up in a 25-18 Pool A first round loss to Chimacum on Sat. morning, Oct. 4.
"This was the first day of our new lineup," said Foster head coach Brandi Travess. "We have a bigger presence in the front row and the rotation looks better. Once we smooth out the kinks we'll start winning."

Against the Cowboys, the Bulldogs stayed in range of victory throughout after leading 4-2. Back and forth, the teams exchanged volleying evenly on the Seattle Christian home courts.

Trailing only 11-9, Foster ran into a rut in which Chimacum bounced off six consecutive points to gain the lead at 17-9 in part due to strong serving. The Bulldogs nearly unhorsed the Cowboys with a 6-1 scoring spurt based on good outside hitting and a block by Tavaesina Maiava to trail only 18-15 by using good net blocking mixed with strong defense.

Kennedy Catholic clobbers Eagles

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Effervescent Kennedy Catholic shined behind the brilliant running of rushers like senior Junior Ngauamo, sophomore Keannu Royster and freshman Treshaun Harrison in bettering the Lindbergh Eagles by a 48-21 score at Highline Memorial Field Friday.

The Lancers improved to 3-0 in the Seamount and 5-0 overall while Lindbergh experienced its first loss in league, dropping to 2-1.
Kennedy is good, but its 20-year coaching veteran Bob Bourgette says, in so many words, that's not good enough.

"We are a good football team," said Bourgette. "But we can be a much better football team. The effort is there, the athletes are there, but it's up to me, and, my staff, to work on things in practice to help them get better."

The Lancers won this game fairly easily, so says the final score, but until the Lancers scored their fifth touchdown of the game with 10:45 left in the fourth quarter, making it 35-14, any tilt of momentum could have seen this game go in an entirely different direction.

Evergreen edges Highline, 22-21

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Evergreen scored late in the second quarter to take the lead, made three crucial stops on Highline possessions on fourth down in the fourth quarter, and experienced success on two key two-point conversion plays, adding up to an exciting 22-21 win over the Pirates for the Wolverines' homecoming game at Highline Memorial Field Friday.

"Hats off to Highine, they did a great job," said Wolverines coach Jim Wright. "That was a playoff atmosphere, a lot of fun."

Both teams played with a lot of competitive fire on offense and defense, making the Wolverines' and Pirates' fans with plenty of occasions to cheer on their teams in this game.

Evergreen struck first in the game in the first quarter, for a touchdown.

But it wasn't easy getting past the Pirates' defense as linebackers Sam Houghtby and AJ Sailiai, defensive back Montae Rainwater and defensive line guys like Isaac Faletogo made the Wolverines' players -- mostly running the ball -- earn every yard they gained.
