PacWest Seniors start off strong at state

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

PacWest got out of the gate quickly at the Senior Little League all-star baseball state tournament in Snohomish despite not gaining experience in any District 7 tournament.

The team went straight to state since it was the only one in the district but won its first two games before absorbing a narrow 8-5 loss to District 6 in Wednesday's winners bracket final.

PacWest opened the age 14-15 action with an 11-1 victory over District 8 on Monday before blasting District 4 by a 10-3 score the next night.

Wednesday's loss dropped the team into the losers bracket final scheduled for Friday with a shot to win and get into the 12 p.m. Saturday state finals.

The tournament is double-elimination, so PacWest would have to beat the District 6 team twice to take the state championship.

Helpful citizen shot and killed in White Center during robbery

The King County Sheriff’s Office is seeking answers and asking the public for help in what appears to be the fatal shooting of a Good Samaritan early this morning in White Center.

Around 1:15 a.m. this morning deputies were called to the 10600 block of 14th Ave. S.W., near the Coronado Springs apartment complex, for a shooting. When they arrived they found a 51-year-old man with a gunshot wound in his chest. He died at the scene shortly after medics arrived and had begun work on him.

Witnesses at the scene informed the officers that the victim had run onto the street after spotting a street robbery in progress. He apparently rushed out to help the victim of this robbery and was shot while assisting him. The suspect and the street robbery victim both fled the scene after the shot was fired.

Thief stopped at West Seattle Summerfest

A 20-year-old man grabbed an envelope full of cash from a vendor booth at the West Seattle Summerfest Sunday but he was quickly pursued by booth employees and the West Seattle Herald's own David Rosen.

Officers were working an emphasis patrol at noon near California Ave SW and SW Alaska St when witnesses reported a fight down the street.

Police found two people holding the suspect on the ground, and learned the suspect had just stolen $4500 in cash from the Deano’s Grill booth.

The owner of the booth told officers he had handed one of his cashiers an envelope full of cash for her register, when the suspect reached over the counter, grabbed the envelope from the cashier, and fled.

As the suspect ran, the booth owner followed after him, recruiting several others including Rosen. They tackled the suspect and held him down until officers arrived.

Police arrested the 20-year-old man and booked him into King County Jail for robbery.

Man arrested for attacking gay couple at SeafoodFest

Information provided by Seattle Police Department

Police arrested a 22-year-old man Saturday at the Ballard Seafood Fest after he shouted slurs and attacked a gay couple with a skateboard.

Officers were working an emphasis patrol near Ballard Avenue NE and NW Vernon Place around 9:30 PM when witnesses approached them and reported a disturbance down the block.

Officers then saw a 22-year-old man walking toward them with a skateboard in his hands, followed closely by a second man, who called out to officers and said he’d just been attacked.

The victim told officers he and his boyfriend were walking down the street holding hands when the suspect began shouting anti-gay slurs at them, and then rushed toward them while swinging his skateboard. The suspect missed the men, and then turned and fled.

When questioned about the incident, the suspect informed officers he was “just chilling,” and was having a “bad night.”

Police arrested the 22-year-old man and booked him into the King County Jail for investigation of malicious harassment, Washington’s hate crime statute.

Dow Constantine to be West Seattle Parade Grand Marshall

King County Executive Dow Constantine will be this year's Grand Marshal for the 82nd annual West Seattle Parade.

The parade is scheduled for Saturday July 18, 2015, at 11:00 AM. It will travel South on California Ave SW for 1.5 miles from SW Lander St through the Alaska Junction to SW Edmunds St.

Constantine said, “The West Seattle Parade has been a highlight of our family's summers my whole life. I’ve walked the parade as a Scout, marched in the school band, and appeared as both a candidate and as an elected official. This is the community that raised me, so being asked to serve as Grand Marshal of the parade means a lot to me personally.”

At this time the parade is scheduled to have over 80 entries, including parade floats, marching bands, and the only appearance of the Vancouver Police Motorcycle Drill Team, as well as the Seattle Police Motorcycle Drill Team.

The West Seattle Parade Committee is a community service committee of the West Seattle Rotary Club Service Foundation.

At Large in Ballard: Divided We Fall

By Peggy Sturdivant

My next-door neighbors were away for three weeks. They returned to a Ballard parched by the high temperatures and scorched by the anger that has erupted since the announcement by the mayor’s office of a transitional encampment for the homeless at a former Seattle City Light substation at 2836 NW Market Street.

Kirk Robbins, President of Ballard District Council, traveled back from an island off of Maine in near ignorance of what was smoldering until he entered a room of nearly 90 people at the July Council meeting.

They landed in a Ballard with its residents divided and feeling cut off from city government. Alas. I hate divisive issues. I prefer being with friends and family who share similar opinions, or who at least are willing to discuss differing viewpoints respectfully. With the response to the admittedly unexpected news of a potential 52-tent site on NW Market I feel at odds with friends, my spouse, and just plain upset.
