Extreme makeover needed for theater

No movies, no buttered popcorn, no zealous fans enjoying one of this city’s neatest long-lived businesses. The historic Des Moines Theater (Cinema) marquee reads, “Closed for Repairs.”

On Nov. 1, King County Fire District 26 and city of Des Moines officials closed the popular cinema for out-of-compliance safety issues dating back to August 2004.

Cinema manager Joel Thomson said, “For eight long years I’ve fought to get first-run films.

Family sold Saltwater site to state in 1950

Editor’s note: This is the last of three installments featuring stories about growing up in the Roberts family, as told to their granddaughter for a Good Old Days article and submitted to the Des Moines Historical Society. Parts one and two appeared in the Times/News earlier this year.

After moving to Saltwater Grove in approximately 1931, where he built the family home (still used today by the assistant ranger at Salt Water Park) J.

County moratorium urged

As King County Executive Ron Sims pointed out recently, over 59 languages are spoken in unincorporated North Highline.

Almost 50 percent of our 32,000 residents are from communities of color.

As newly elected members of the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council, and as members of communities of color, we acknowledge the initial efforts of the Council to facilitate public discussions regarding annexation options for our neighborhoods.

We have noted, that very few members of communities of color have participated in recent public forums.

Deputy answers critics

I am a deputy with the King County Sheriff’s Office. I also serve on the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council. Lee Lim is North Highline’s Asian liaison with the Sheriff’s Office and a council member. Steve Davis is a sergeant in the fraud unit of the Sheriff's Office and a council member. Barb Peters is a long-time volunteer with the Sheriff’s Office and a council member.

Our positions on the council are voluntary. The only benefit is being involved in the community, which to some of us is important.

Support for HL council

It is with a great deal concern that I have read recent letters to the editor regarding the potential annexation of White Center and Boulevard Park by Seattle or Burien. This is an issue that, when resolved, will set the tone for all of South King County for many years to come. As such, it demands the full attention of both our citizens as well as our elected officials at all levels.

What concerns me, however, is not the discourse taking place but the tone of that discourse.

Lawmaker offers thanks

‘Please stay involved’

To the voters of Burien:

Thank you for taking time to vote. I appreciate the chance to serve the entire community for the last eight years. We’ve done a lot in that time.

My recent re-election campaign offered a bright, positive, upbeat vision of Burien’s future. We did this in a professional manner, in good taste, and with honesty, truth, solid ethics and values. My deepest thanks to everyone who voted for me.

I chose not to respond to the smear campaign against me.
