Body found at Golden Gardens Park ruled as suicide

The King County Medical Examiners Office has released the name and cause of death of a man found at Golden Gardens Park on Jan. 6.

According to investigators, Martin Peden, 35, died of thermal burns, and his death has been classified as a suicide.

Seattle Police and Seattle Fire Department responded to the scene at around 7:30 a.m. after they received a report of a body found near a fire pit on the beach.

KOMO News initially reported that the body was decomposed; however, SPD confirmed that man was dead when they arrived and that he had not been there very long.

Amanda's View: Not in and of oneself indecent

By Amanda Knox

Soaking for several hours with eight other naked women in a hot tub, in an open room in the spa with three other similarly packed tubs, I pondered two things: tattoos (because there were a smattering of those to appreciate), and the lack of opportunities we have in our society to be naked.

It’s too bad, is my first thought. I enjoy the rare occasion that I find myself comfortably and respectfully naked with other adult women of all ages, colors, shapes, and sizes. There’s a nice camaraderie to it, a shared fleshy humanness. Perhaps because our bodies are as unique and inextricably part of who we are as our sense of self. I appreciate when we get to experience that part of each other, without judgment or shame.

Not everyone thinks so, of course. It’s an ongoing discussion even within my own family. What’s the big deal? I ask. I don’t want to see that! some of them say. And no one wants to see me! The fundamental polarity between these perspectives makes it feel like we must be talking about completely different things.

Pat's View: The Scream

By Pat Cashman

“We mustn’t scream at each other, the walls in this house have ears.”
---Tennessee Williams in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

“If there is one sound that follows the march of humanity, it is the scream.”
---David Gemmell

“Laughter is just a slowed down scream…”
---Robin Hobb

Scientists say the loudest living thing on earth is the blue whale---whose vocalizations can reach 188 decibels and have been recorded 500 miles away. Perhaps, but the whale’s low-frequency noises are pretty much below human hearing---much like the sound of a woman asking her husband to take out the garbage.
But when it comes to all-out audible screaming---the noise that most mammals make when they are scared, embarrassed, thrilled or goosed---my personal vote for loudest of all creatures goes to Tom Walker.

Westside Snow Report 1-11-16

By Greg Whittaker

It has been a December to remember for the faithful NW ski and snowboard enthusiasts. The best powder (yes newbies we have powder) in 2 years has fallen during our holiday season, with consecutive snow cycles that lead to 9 inches on 12 inches on another 10 inches falling. After a while, you couldn’t find the bottom, and the lucky visited the white room. The white room is an expression for skiing and boarding whereas snow flies over your head to such an effect that the only color that exists is a lack of color, or white.

Heavy rescue called for in motor vehicle incident that sends three to hospital

A late model Scion sedan was smashed in and on it's side following a collision with a Volkswagen convertible Beetle shortly before 10pm on Friday, Jan. 8.

The female driver of the beetle was shaken up but was conscious and alert but the driver and passenger of the Scion van were apparently more seriously injured and all three were taken to the hospital.

The incident occurred in the 4400 block of SW Graham Street and multiple units of the Seattle Fire Department responded to help extricate the driver and passenger from the Scion.

The Scion was apparently traveling eastbound on SW Graham when the collision with the VW that was traveling northbound came out of an alley.

Traffic on SW Graham was stopped while the cleanup and rescue took place.
