Kathy Blackwell, past SW Seattle Historical Society Board President has died

 

The Southwest Seattle Historical Society has announced the passing of past Board President Kathy Blackwell. She died on February 2, 2024.

Kathy served as a very hardworking Board President for several years until she resigned in July 2023 when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  Kathy had been an active volunteer for SWSHS and was a leader of our Gala for years.

Kathy was gracious, kind, and committed to SWSHS.  She generously shared her time and talents. We miss her deeply.  Our community is lessened by her passing.

The family does not currently have a memorial service scheduled. It will be announced if scheduled.

Land use application filed for Holden Apartments at 35th and Holden

126 unit building with work/live and retail; 66 parking spaces

The Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections has gotten the land use application for the Holden Apartments to be built at 35th SW and SW Holden. 

The plan calls for a 7 story 126 apartment unit building with three live/work units and retail space. 

66 parking spaces are planned.

July 23 shooting on Delridge Way suspects now being prosecuted

The July 23, 2023 shooting at a gas station in the 5400 block of Delridge Way S.W. has been sent for prosecution.

 Seattle Police sent the cases on March 11, 2024 and King County prosecutors filed charges March 12. Two defendants were charged under case numbers (Charging documents here 24-1-00865-5) and 24-1-00864-7.

Both were charged in King County Superior Court with Murder in the Second Degree with a firearm enhancement.

Madison Middle School dedicates new athletic field, track and lighting

Madison Middle School is set to dedicate their new  athletic field and track this Friday. Westside Seattle reached out to the Project Manager for Seattle Public Schools, Conrad Plyler who said,

The project was funded by the BEX V Capital Levy and the budget for the complete project was $3,773,540.00.  

The field project was constructed by A-1 Landscaping and Construction, Inc. and included installation of a new drainage system, new subgrade, new artificial turf and a new track surface.  The field includes lines for Football and Soccer, as well as tick marks demarking the field layouts for U11 Soccer and 3 U10 Soccer.  The field began construction in June 2023 and was completed in December 2023.

Seattle Police arrest suspects in two homicides in two days

Detectives arrested suspects in two separate homicides in two days.

Officers responded to the first homicide in West Seattle on July 23, 2023 at about 10:40 p.m. in the 5400 block of Delridge Way Southwest. Initially, they located evidence of a shooting, but no victims.

After a crash on the West Seattle Bridge shortly after, a 27-year-old man driving the car was found shot several times. He died at Harborview Medical Center.

Seattle police detectives worked with SWAT and the Gun Violence Reduction Unit to arrest a juvenile suspect on March 12.
